Well, here is where all my heart and attention have been the last few months. I have still been doing photo jobs, but I have not posted any. I will have to do a catch up post in the future. I had grandiose ideas of catching up on all my blogging by doing the 12 days of Christmas (a blog post for each day). Instead, here I am still burning the candle at both ends (my eyes are burning as I type this) and all you get is this virtual Christmas card :) I will return in the New Year. Until then, I will be busy in Santa's workshop and eating enough calories to sustain a herd of elephants. 'Tis the Season!

Two Birds of a Feather Part: 1

I have a six year old daughter that I am told is my mini me. It is hard for me to see the physical resemblances because it is hard to REALLY know what I look like. I spend far more time looking at those close to me than I do myself. I could tell you how my husband has a dimple/crease next to his mouth that only shows when he chews or tries to hold back a laugh. But, what I look like when I laugh, is always a surprise when I see a photo or video.
Though I can’t see the similarities that are more obvious to others, I can see my daughter’s inner workings that I recognize. There are certain looks she gets on her face in different situations that I know EXACTLY what she is thinking, because I was thinking the exact same thing at her age. You would think it would be comforting to know what is going on in your child’s head, but then you remember the life’s lessons you had to learn and realize she will most likely make many of the same mistakes. Though I must say, this girl has a much greater sense of conscience than I did at her age. When I was lying my way in and out of situations, she is confessing her every action :)

There really isn't much to say about these photos, you can see for yourself that this girl is beautiful and full of personality. The only thing you can't see, is that her mom is one of the most beautiful people I know, inside and out :)

Who knew I would complain about a sunny day in the PNW? But, after this shoot I did! We had MONTHS of overcast and gloomy days and that was what I had planned for when scheduling this shoot, overcast skies. But instead, I got a bright full sun afternoon. Normally this can still be worked with, but somehow with a large group and scattered trees, I had a difficult time finding a place evenly lit to accommodate them! After countless hours of processing the images and numerous cuss words, I was able to turn a result that I could be proud of.

The sad thing with all my complaining is, they were an AWESOME family to work with! I can't tell you how much I love and admire the Mafi family. Heidi is one of the most talented/artistic people I know, which added to my need to produce great results. Talk about pressure! (self induced of course). Thank you Mafi & Larsen families for entrusting me with your family portraits.

The Cave

Despite this post's title and my lack of posting in general, NO, I am not hiding in a cave. Though living in the dark Pacific Northwest in a home with North facing windows and NO natural light, it can feel that way :)

I have been enjoying my little ones and wondering where the last year went. I blinked and my baby is turning one next week! I have been spending my time doing a lot of self improvement and reflection. With this rejuvenation, I have been brainstorming ways to carry this into my business. I have some great project ideas up my sleeve and am excited to share them with you as they become a reality. Stay posted.

Lastly, I am OBSESSED with this song! For those who know me personally and know my whole story, will know how PERFECT it is! I can relate to every word! I love its message of hope, triumph and finding oneself. ENJOY!

I am happy to say, no children were harmed in the creation of these images! Yes, I shot these photos of my kids with my husband absent and we actually had FUN doing it! There wasn't the stress that usually accompanies shooting my own children. I was worried because I have been planning this shoot in my head for months and I had a deadline to shoot it (which I missed, oh well! The Grandmas will get their Valentine's Day cards late this year) I hope you enjoy them and know that I LOVE that you stopped by to check them out. Happy Valentine's Day!

PS. Yes, you have to hear me complain again! These photos have totally lost their sharpness and quality that I spent so many hours getting just so. Something was lost in the translation from my originals to the blog. I am hoping to have a new blog in the near future and with it, no more flat lack-luster images.

*I have had training on how to use my camera and am confident on my skills there, but all this Photoshop and computer stuff I have had to teach myself and learn as I go. In truth, I know just enough to get myself in trouble :) My old methods of posting on blogger worked nicely, but apparently that has changed and I am not as pleased with my current results (talking about this post). The photos have lost their "punch" somewhere in the translation of me getting them from PS to the web. If anyone has any tips, or know what I can do to make it better, PLEASE let me know! Thank you!

Summertime, When the Livin's Easy.

It is easy in the Pacific Northwest to long for the summer just moments after it has left. It is far too short! With little warmth and sun, my ipod took me back to summer for a short moment. You know how music can transport you back to any place and time? Well, these two songs take me right back to spending our summer vacation at our family cabin in Montana. My husband, Sherman, downloaded the first song as a surprise for me onto my ipod, in my workout mix. The second song is my response. You can get a real feel for our different tastes in music. ENJOY!

When the Wymans called to schedule their shoot, Heather was worried about the dog misbehaving. I was all prepared for the dog but no one prepared me for her husband! Just kidding Joe! I brought my husband along to help everyone smile, but this family turned the tables and had us laughing!
Thanks again Wymans for a fun morning. Our prayers were answered and the weather held out long enough for us to get some great shots. I know I am posting a lot, but I had a lot that I loved. Hope you enjoy them too!

What More Could You Ask For?

I have had it really good, many times. But, I have to say, this was my easiest shoot to date! The littlest dude was the cutest! His family had practiced with him before hand and when I would count to three, he would look straight at me and say "CHEESE!" It was so dang cute and made the whole family laugh, giving them genuine smiles as well. Not only was I in great company, but somehow we managed the most perfect weather as well. Thank you "L" family for a great morning!

While doing this photo shoot, I was reminded what I am in for with having a boy. As we were helping the kids to their places on the rock, Michelle and I took a big step sideways when the kids started yelling and asking us, "what is that?!" We looked by our feet (just inches away from stepping in it) a DEAD POSSUM! We both screamed and grabbed each other, like you would expect most women to do. "N" was so excited and asked, "Mom, can I poke it with a stick?"
HA! I couldn't stop laughing! What is it with boys, dead things and the need for a stick? I know my turn is shortly coming and I can only hope my little guy turns out as sweet as "N." I love photographing these two, they cooperate so well and you can't beat the beautiful smile and model like poses from little "L." Thanks guys for another great day!

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to take a lighting workshop from Mark Wallace. He really is an amazing photographer, but some of my most valuable lessons I learned from the models. So if you are thinking about high school senior photos, you might want to take notes.
*Even though these are not watermarked, I do still claim them as my own.

Lesson #1: Dramatic/Harsh lighting can be flattering.

Lesson #2: If all else fails, rat your hair and try a pose from America's Next Top Model.

Lesson #3: Photographers can be models too (thanks Wade).

Lesson #4: YES! You CAN finally pull out those turquoise spandex you have been saving for a special occasion.

I recently returned from a fabulous day listening to some amazing photographers at Seattle’s WPPI Road trip. I have so many new tools and ideas in my tool belt just waiting for me to put them to work. But, in the words of my “Photog. Idol”, Jasmine Star, I have to, “Keep It Real.” I know she was directing her tag line to all those who are about to make their mark in the industry, reminding them to keep their feet on the ground. But for me, it took on a much different meaning.

After a long drive home in Seattle’s rush hour traffic, I had time to play with my big ideas and dreams of where I would love to take my talent and little business. Ideas were flowing and I was getting more and more excited by the minute. I realized with more work, time and learning, I had all the capabilities needed to make my business as large as I’d like. At this same moment, I had to ask myself, “at what cost?”

Keeping it real for me may mean putting my big dreams aside for a season and doing the job I previously committed to do, be present for my children. Is this a copout for not putting the work in needed to follow my dreams? I don’t think so. Is this a self-righteous judgment call on other working moms? Absolutely not! When I create something I want to give it my all and see that it is done right, and it consumes my mind. I just know that I have to control my obsessive self and remember that my time will come. I will get the opportunity to perfect my craft, but that is not today. Today I need to carefully balance my day between three growing children and a loving husband. So do I abandon my craft all together? HELL NO! In this delicate balance I also need time for ME to grow, even if that means minutes a day. In those stolen minutes, I will happily plug away at any shoot that comes my way and I will celebrate every inch of growth as a huge milestone. Is it a sacrifice? I don’t know, maybe I will find out thirty years from now.

I tried to seize the moment when I saw the sun shining through my bedroom window, both girls dressed, hair done and baby was fed. I have been wanting a photo of my kiddos on my bed for a long time. My husband made this bed for me as a wedding gift with only a draw knife and his pocket knife, beautiful eh? Well, my moment was short lived, and I was asking too much to have all 3 happy for the photo! When the stars all realign, I will attempt this photo again.
But, I am happy to say I am back from my husband's mandated "maternity leave," and starting photo sessions again! I am already booked for the rest of July, but am completely open for August and September. NOW, is the time to start thinking about those Christmas card photos to beat the rush and seize the day with the good weather!

This may be the absolute most patient family in the world! Not only were they rained on for half of their shoot (and kept smiling), but I went into labor 4 days after the shoot, when I thought I still had three weeks to go! Long story short, they are seeing their sneak peek after 3 weeks rather than 3 days!

While on our Christmas vacation, my niece asked if I would do photos with her and her friends. I was happy to do it. They were a blast to work with and as you can see very photogenic. Thanks to a long Christmas vacation in Utah, I was able to do photos for my brother and his family. They haven't had their family photos done in YEARS! I like to flatter myself and think that it is because I haven't lived near them in years ;)
This may have been my fastest photo shoot to date. It was FREEZING! Despite the cold, I was really excited about what I was able to capture in such a short amount of time. The kids were great and really stuck it in there with me. Poor 20 month old Shaw was losing feeling in his hands and that is when we knew it was time to call it quits. Thanks guys for a fun afternoon and for bringing such cute kids into the world to call me Auntie!

"The cobbler's kids never have shoes." In this case, I managed to get Christmas photos for my clients this year but NONE for my own Christmas card! Don't get me wrong, I like to be busy, but somehow ran out of time and nice days to get photos of my own kids. I had some borrowed lighting equipment and thought I would take advantage of them and do a shoot in my home. As you can see, the results were anything but stellar. The end result was me fuming through the ears with frustration at the lack of cooperation from my kids and photos that look like they were done by a first day employee at JCPenney. Of course I can laugh about it now, but please understand why you did not get a Christmas card from me this year. I love you anyway and Merry Christmas!

I did this photo shoot nearly two weeks ago! That will give you an idea of how swamped I have been lately. Regardless, I am having fun doing all that I am doing and especially had a great time working with the 'B' family. You really will never meet nicer people in your life. The morning we shot was really cold and I didn't hear one complaint out of any of them, they just did what I asked and smiled! What more can you ask for?
This was also my first shoot with my new assistant. He did a great job at holding lighting gear in place for me, making the family smile (more like laugh) and keeping things comfortable and fun. Did I mention he is really good looking too?!
Yes, my husband has joined the Rahne Drop team and will be accompanying me on my shoots to keep things fun and have a second pair of hands and eyes to catch things I may miss while behind the camera. I really wish I got a picture of him holding my reflector while doing the splits over a river to get this shot. There are always good laughs when Sherman is around and I love him for it!

Short Notice: Good Cause

I have been so swamped lately and have totally neglected my blog. But this is a great cause and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to get the word out (even if it is such short notice).

'Tis the season for Christmas card photo shoots and rainy weather. As you can tell, neither one go together so well. Have you ever had in your mind the exact way you wanted a certain situation to go? Has it EVER actually worked that way? Well, for the first time I can say, "working with the Hatch family is just THAT way!" They were the easiest and most comfortable clients I have worked with. Pregnancy, Website & Road Trip to Canada...

What do these three things have in common? Well, NOTHING, other than the three best excuses I can come up with for not blogging in ages! I am happy to say that all is well with my pregnancy and the baby is developing well. I wish I could say, I feel awesome, but that would be lying. Though, I am blessed to feel as well as I do and still love having projects to keep me occupied.
I am also excited to say that my official website is almost complete and I will make the big announcement when we make the launch (I wish there were some way we could all gather and break a bottle of champagne over my computer and watch my site drift into cyberspace!)
I recently returned from a road trip to my motherland of Canada, with my sister, for a good friend's wedding. We had so much fun traveling down memory lane and catching up with old friends. We even got to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving while there (and for those of you who are wondering, YES, it is just like Thanksgiving in the States, turkey and all).
I snapped a few photos while at the wedding and here is my favorite.

Okay, so they are not JUST some family. This is my sister and her adorable family! Though, I have to admit I am not sure who I get more nervous shooting for, my family or "just some family." I obsess equally over the photo shoots and the end result. I think the only difference between shooting for family and for others, is that when shooting my family I can use phrases like, "Stop making that ridiculous face," "I have no idea if this is going to work" and make all the inappropriate noises I want :)

A Little Piece of Home.

I returned this weekend from the most beautiful place on Earth, "My Happy Place," Echo Lake, MT. The place that holds more memories and emotions for me than any other place in the world. When I was a kid, in the summer we would retreat from the Canadian weather and live at the cabin on the lake. To this day, talking weather temperature is still a little confusing for me. I only comprehend Centigrade when describing cold winter temperatures and Fahrenheit for hot summer weather. Odd, I know.
As a child, I would sleep in my swimsuit, wake to the smell of hot cakes and bacon, eat only because I HAD to and was out the door and into the water. I would swim and float until my mom would drag me out, blue lipped and chattering.
In my teens, the lake was still a place of solace and adventure. Instead of spending my days swimming, it was cruising in the boat looking for cute boys and floating on the water lathered in baby oil for the perfect tan. It was also a haven during the difficult summer before starting high school. An American school with the same number of students as my home town's whole population!
Now, that I am an adult, I get just as much satisfaction watching my daughters take on my "fish-like" attributes. I still strive for the best tan possible and instead of searching for the cutest boy, I bring him with me. This last trip I found myself not being able to take in deep enough breaths to take in all that the air there holds for me. The beauty, the tranquility, the memories and the love. When I am forced back into the "real world" and things get difficult, I close my eyes, I smell the hot cakes, feel the cool of the lake and go to my "Happy Place," I go HOME.

The FULL Story: (This is the email we received from our friend Mac Pinski)
To my friends,

Most of you that know me, know that I like to spend my summers in Montana at our family cabin. My mother's side of the family had engraved this ritual into our brains at an early age.

My mother, her sister Bizzy, and her brother Mickey, hauled their families to Montana each summer for an extended stay at the family cabin. As kids, we spent upwards of six weeks each summer swimming, fishing, playing, and anything else that kids can imagine. This time spent together created strong relationships with my first cousins, aunts and uncles, etc... to the extent that they are as much of a part of my immediate family as my mother, father, brothers and sister.

In 2009, we have experienced a number of tragedies that have rocked this family to its core:

* In late March, my Uncle Wayne (Biz's husband) passed away from a battle with prostate cancer. Although his passing was hard on the family, we had prepared ourselves for this event.

* Two weeks later, my Aunt Jackie, (Mick's wife) passed away from a battle with small cell carcinoma, another form of cancer. This too, although tragic, was known and expected.

* Two weeks later, while attending the reception of Jackie's funeral, we received word that Biz passed away from stroke. She had been in the hospital recovering from surgery when the stroke occurred. This news was devastating to my cousin's Wayne and Brett. They had just lost their father a month ago and now their mother had passed away.

* A month later, Brett and Wayne spent Memorial day weekend cleaning out their folks house preparing it for an estate sale. Brett wanted to take a few items home with him to Denver and rented a U-Haul trailer for the trek home. On his way back to Denver, the trailer dislodged from the truck and began swaying back and forth. The momentum flipped his truck while traveling on the highway. Fortunately, his wife Kelly and their kids, Cole (age 3) and Caroline (age 5) were uninjured. Brett, however, suffered a C5/ C6 fracture. He was airlifted to the nearest hospital and surgery was done immediately to realign his spinal cord. At this time he is paralyzed from the chest down.

I spent the past week at or near the hospital, spending each night with him so his wife could get some rest. Tomorrow he is being transferred to Denver and has been admitted to Craig Hospital. He is very fortunate to have been admitted to this hospital as they do not accept every applicant.

Brett is a well known and respected physical therapist in Denver area. He is well connected with the doctors and aids at this hospital as well as the surrounding community and they are anxiously awaiting his arrival tomorrow. Although his recovery has gone well, this family has a long road to travel and the endpoint is still unknown. I was able to view images of the damage to his spinal cord. The doctor compared it to when someone kinks a hose to stop the water from flowing. This injury was very severe.

I returned home over the weekend and have been struggling with how I can assist them while living in Seattle. The only thing I can come up with to share his story with others in hope that all of us together can help this family during this time. Kelly, Brett's wife, is going to be challenged with running their family. She is going to be caring for her husband, working, raising two kids, as well as worrying about all the things that most of us take for granted when running a household.

I realize that most of us are experiencing tough times financially, but I need to ask that if you are in a position to help out the Purdom family, your gift would be greatly appreciated.

Please know that I struggled with sending this email out to each of you. I am not one to turn to others for help, but, I am not sure were else to turn. My hope is that I am able to use the relationships that I have developed over my lifetime to help out a family that is truly in need of some assistance.

I didn't know how else to title this post, because you may just see this woman's name written in the stars someday. I had the great opportunity to snap some head shots for Melain (she really is a one name star:) She is an incredibly talented person and is likely to have a great music career ahead of her, but in the mean time, we will keep her here so she can keep giving me great hair :) We had SO many great photos to choose from, but I must say this one is my all time favorite. I am sure I will post more in the future. Thanks Melain for such a fun evening and Katrina for the extra set of hands (I may just get used to having an assistant and won't let you go back to college ;)

More fun stuff about Melain. She is an amazing hairstylist and make-up artist. We are talking of teaming up to give you more glamour for your shoots! Wow! This shoot was SO much fun AND easy! This little guy is the definition of chilaxin and handsome. I now see why his Auntie Lisa is smitten. Can you believe he is only 1.5 weeks old?! Stupid Right-Click!

I am SO bummed! I mean really bummed! I short while ago I did a photo shoot for a high school drama musical. I spent well over 12 hrs on that shoot from start to finish. I didn't charge the school or club a dime and provided them with a high quality service. The only way I would make anything off of my time was from the prints (which I discounted my prices drastically! AND gave each of them a FREE 5x7) I did receive two orders that I am very grateful for, but things remained really quiet with sales. I got to thinking, "did I right-click protect my gallery?" Sure enough, I checked my settings and I forgot to click that little box! AAAGH! So, still hoping my worst nightmare had not come true, I did a few quick Google searches and VOILA! There were my photos displayed on other's pages without my permission. I think that is called stealing. I was so disappointed, let down, broken hearted, you name it. I did the math and I made $1.42/hr on that shoot. Don't get me wrong, it is NOT about the money. I won't lie, I still had a great time working on that project and can chalk it up to experience. Stupid me and stupid right-click!

Bet I Can Make You Smile!

Tonight I had the opportunity to assist Wade again. Since it was a small shoot I got to mostly watch and learn. And learn I did (more on that below). But, I did have an opportunity to snap a few shots and I cannot stop smiling every time I look at this little girl. Her mom is a the costume designer for EBT and she gets to practice "ballet stuff" while her mom fits the dancers. She really was the sweetest thing I have ever talked to and had an incredible sense of style! Check out her hair that she did ALL by herself! Yes, there are 20+ bobby pins in her hair. Told you I could make you smile!

Now for a little lesson in studio lighting. I will embarrass myself with this horrible photo to best illustrate my point. Whenever Wade would meter the light, we would get really crazy readings, time after time. I couldn't see anything wrong with what we were doing and Wade was certain his light meter was broken. Upon further investigation, I got a phone call from Wade explaining what he found. His lumisphere was not over the meter's lens, thus messing with the readings. He so nicely sent me this beautiful photo as proof to our mishap. Who said two heads are better than one? (in Wade's defense, he was running the shoot, breaking down language barriers, testing a new camera, playing with new focusing techniques etc. As for me? I've got nothin'! :)

I am gearing up for two back to back, full days of shooting! First with the Tahoma High School drama dpt. and then I am filling in for Wade at the Bellevue Arts Festival. I made a mad dash to Seattle today to pack up on more "juice." I purchased a vertical grip and battery pack for my camera along with 8 more GB's. I am really excited, but know the work that awaits me when I am done. Editing, editing and more editing...

Truth have it, I have ALWAYS wanted to be a dancer! I envy the way dancers can express themselves through their bodies. I was asked to be the photographer for a church dance and instead of cheesy dance pictures, I thought it would be fun to do a Photo Booth. The dance is Saturday so I thought I had better work out the kinks before hand and test it out on my family. It was like herding butterflies, but the results were fun non the less.

I had my first sit down mentoring session with Seattle photographer, Wade Heninger. Wade is a wealth of knowledge and I am so excited for the opportunity to glean all I can from him. I can't wait to play with all I have learned! I got a crash course on many different lighting styles and affects. Here is a sample of my evening shoot at Wade's houses, with my daughter and two of his kids (Sarah is certain no one will recognize her in "disguise).

I am in the process of replacing and learning new equipment. It is some exciting times for me right now and I am looking forward to seeing my knowledge and little business grow. I am currently without a camera and going into withdrawals, but my wait will be worth it when my new baby arrives next Monday! Every year our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) holds a Creche exhibit in our church house. This event has grown immensely and was even voted the Seattle Times Top 10 Things to Do During the Holiday Season. Over 400 Nativities are displayed depicting the birth of Christ. This year my sister, her husband and baby boy were asked participate in the live Nativity. I snapped this picture while there and kind of liked the results.
